TRYOUTS FAQ

A Parent Guide to Tryouts, Offers, and Club Selection

Choosing a soccer club is about more than simply hearing, “You made the team.” Before committing, families should understand coaching, player development, communication, costs, expectations, and overall fit.

ASA wants families to feel informed and confident as they move through tryout season. Asking questions, understanding timelines, and taking time to evaluate options can help families make the best decision for their player.

About ASA

Arkansas Soccer Association (ASA) is the state governing body for youth soccer in Arkansas. We are here to support players, families, clubs, coaches, and referees by helping create a soccer environment that is organized, fair, and centered on the best interests of kids.

We care because the club experience should be about more than just making a team — it should be about development, opportunity, clear standards, and a positive experience for every player and family. Our role is to provide guidance, consistency, and support so the game can grow in a healthy way across our state.

A Few Reminders

  • Families may attend multiple tryouts.
  • Families should take time to ask questions before making a decision.
  • A roster offer is only one part of the process.
  • Coaching, communication, cost, development, and club culture all matter.
  • Tryout and contact rules are based on the player’s current age group, not the team they may be trying out for.
  • Be aware that, under current US Soccer implementation, age group formation now aligns with the school calendar (August 1–July 31) rather than birth year.

Key Dates for the 2026/27 Season

  • May 1: Early signing period opens for returning players staying with the same club.
  • May 1: Players 15U and older become free agents for direct contact purposes.
  • May 4: Tryouts may begin for 15U and older.
  • May 12: Players 14U and younger become free agents for direct contact purposes.
  • May 18: Tryouts may begin for 14U and younger.
  • June 10: Open signing period begins for all players.

Frequently Asked Questions

When are tryouts held?

Tryout dates vary by age group and club, but ASA maintains a tryout calendar for member clubs that submit dates. Families should monitor both club communications and ASA updates.

Can clubs contact players early?

Direct contact rules are tied to free-agent status.

For the 2026/27 season:

  • 15U and older: Direct contact allowed beginning May 1
  • 14U and younger: Direct contact allowed beginning May 12

Before those dates, no team official or representative should directly contact a player or family regarding tryouts or team formation unless there is prior written consent from the player’s current coach or director. Public notices are still permitted.

Can my child attend multiple tryouts?

Yes. Families are encouraged to explore options and find the best fit for their player. Families should also make sure tryout participation happens within the permitted tryout window.

What does accepting an offer mean?

Accepting an offer is a meaningful commitment for the upcoming seasonal year. A player may sign with only one competitive team or club at a time during the seasonal year. Once a player signs with another ASA competitive team, further recruiting contact should stop.

Can clubs pressure families to decide early?

Families should understand what they are agreeing to before saying yes. Under ASA policy, if a club holds tryouts near or after the open signing date, the player must be given at least 48 hours to accept or decline before the offer can be rescinded.

Can my child change clubs later?

Families should be cautious before making a commitment. The policy explains that players may sign with only one competitive team or club at a time, and formal registration rules may also be affected by release requirements or whether a previous team is still participating in USYS Regional or National competition.

What if we made a quick decision and regret it?

Families should ask questions and feel confident before accepting an offer. ASA policy does provide one important protection: if a club holds tryouts near or after the open signing date, the player must be given a minimum of 48 hours to accept or reject the offer before it can be rescinded.

Even so, once a player signs, the commitment is meaningful, so it is best to slow down and make sure the fit is right before saying yes.

Where can I learn more?

Families should review club information carefully, ask direct questions, and use ASA resources to better understand timelines, membership standards, and expectations.

Understanding Club Fit

The best club choice is not always the first offer. The right fit may depend on coaching style, development opportunities, cost, communication, training environment, travel expectations, and family priorities.

Every player and every family is different. The goal is not simply to accept the first opportunity — it is to choose the environment that best supports the player’s long-term experience and development.

What Does ASA Membership Mean?

ASA member clubs operate within shared standards for tryouts, offers, signing timelines, and recruiting expectations. These standards are intended to create more fairness, consistency, and a better experience for players and families across the state.

Do ASA rules apply across the club?

Yes. ASA policy states that if a club has even one team participating in ASA member programming, then the tryout and offer timelines apply across all teams in that club, including teams that may participate in other leagues.

Why does ASA set timelines and standards?

ASA sets timelines and standards to support fairness for players, families, and clubs. The policy is designed to reduce early recruiting pressure, create a more consistent tryout environment, and help all clubs operate within the same expectations.

Questions to Ask Before Choosing a Club

A roster spot is only one part of the decision. Before committing, families may want to ask:

  • Who will coach my child?
  • How are teams formed and evaluated?
  • What is your playing time philosophy?
  • What is the total cost for the season?
  • What is the time and travel commitment?
  • How does the club communicate with families?

These questions can help families better understand the environment, expectations, and overall fit of a club before making a decision.
