PHOENIX (Jan. 8, 2017) — The 2017 Region IV US Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program (US Youth Soccer ODP) Championships, began Jan. 5 at Reach 11 Sports Complex in Phoenix. The four-day tournament will feature teams of elite players in the 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004 age groups, from Region IV, which includes Alaska, Arizona, California North, California South, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.
The four day tournament will ultimately determine who represents Region IV in the 2017 US Youth Soccer ODP Championships in the 2000 and 2001 age groups. Washington 99 Boys won its Region IV title last year while the California South 99 Girls and 2000 Boys and Girls won their respective Region IV and ODP National championships.
With programs in all 55 US Youth Soccer State Associations, US Youth Soccer ODP, the original Olympic development program, is available to any player. US Youth Soccer ODP is the only elite player development program that can claim members of Major League Soccer, the National Women’s Soccer League, and the majority of current and past national and youth national team members, as alumni.
Some match highlights from today's games:
Boys 2000
The 2000 boys tournament came to a close after a 0-0 draw in their consolation game. They finished with a record of 1-1-2.
Girls 2000
A goal in the 20th minute for Washington was all it took to beat Utah, 1-0. The result knocks Utah out of the tournament in the semi finals. Utah played well and just came up short.
Boys 2001
The 2001 boys ended their tournament today with a pk shootout loss in the semi-final. Cal south scored first before Ben Ortiz scored the leveller. While the game ended in defeat for Utah, it wasn't a bad tournament as both Ben Ortiz and Julian Vazquez ended in the top goalscorers in their age group.
Girls 2001
Utah advanced after a dominating performance in the semi-final beating Arizona 4-0. Brecken Mozingo added to her goal tally, while Anna Pickering scored a brace. Nicole Ray finished up the scoring. Utah will play in the final tomorrow at 9:30am against Cal South.
Boys 2002
A brace from Daniel Powell helped push Utah through to the final as Utah beat Cal South 3-1. The goals put him at 5 for the tournament good for second in his age group. Utah will be playing in the final against Arizona.
Girls 2002
Zoe Burns scored for Washington in the only goal of the game. The loss knocks Utah out of the tournament. Their magic run ends in the semi-finals.
Boys 2003
A goal in the 19th minute from Hunter Ball put Utah up 1-0 but Arizona answered back and scored twice. The game ended with the final score Arizona 2 Utah 1 despite all of Utah's best efforts.
Girls 2003
After failing to make the semi-finals Utah ended the tournament on a high note, beating Oregon 3-0 on the back of two goals in 11 minutes in the first half.
Boys 2004
Chadwick (Zach) Booth scored a first half hat trick, two of which were part of a 3 goals in 3 minute stretch. It brought his total tally to 5 good for first place in his age group. In total Utah scored 5 times and won the game 5-0.
Girls 2004
In a hotly contested match that needed overtime to find a winner, Utah came up just short in the 1-0 loss.
