With the opening weekend of the US Youth Soccer National League around the corner, we preview all of the North Texas Soccer teams competing in the competition

The Breakdown

Solar Chelsea will enter its first National League season after a runner-up finish at the 2016 US Youth Soccer Region III Championships. Solar was also a finalist in the 2016 US Youth Soccer North Texas State Cup, and was defeated in both the state and regional finals by eventual US Youth Soccer National Champion, Solar Chelsea 02 Red (TX-N). Taylor Conway, Haley Lopez, Morgan Pace, Raigen Powell and Natalie Smathers helped Solar Chelsea 02 Red win the national title, and will now look to secure Solar Chelsea 02 Hopkins’ first trip to the National Championships with a first or second place finish in the National League Blue Division.

The Opponents

Arsenal FC Brown (CA-S) | Dec. 01, 1:15 pm

Solar’s quest to advance to its first National Championship will start with a stiff test from one of the best teams in Southern California in Arsenal FC Brown. Arsenal reached the quarterfinals of the 2015 US Youth Soccer Region IV Championships, but was defeated by fellow National League Blue team, Legends FC 02 Academy 1 (CA-S). Arsenal was a finalist in the 2016 US Youth Soccer Cal South National Cup and has finished in the top two in the previous two US Youth Soccer Far West Regional League (FWRL) California League Cal South Division season, including a league title in the 2014-15 Season. Arsenal will feature Kayla Colbert and Isabel Loza, who represented the Under-14 U.S. Girls National Team at the 2016 US Youth Soccer ODP Thanksgiving Interregional in addition to U-15 USWNT pool players Faith and Paige Hopper.

Chicago Fire Juniors South Premier (IL) | Dec. 02, 9:00 am

Things won’t get easier for Solar on day two when they take on 2016 US Youth Soccer Region II Finalists, Chicago Fire Juniors South Premier. Chicago Fire is the defending 2016 US Youth Soccer Illinois State Cup Champion and won the 2016 US Youth Soccer Spring Midwest Regional League (MRL) Premier I Blue title and currently sits in fourth of the 2016 Fall MRL Premier I Division. Solar will have to be wary of Chicago Fire forward, Megan Hutchinson, who led all scorers in the Under-13 Girls age group at the 2016 Region II Championships with nine goals.

Tennessee SC 2002 Showcase (TN) | Dec. 03, 9:00 am

In Solar’s third match of the opening weekend, they will take on fellow Region III team Tennessee SC 02 (TN). Tennessee SC was the 2016 US Youth Soccer Tennessee State Cup runner up and is a two-time US Youth Soccer Southern Regional Premier League (SRPL) East Champion and 2016 Region III Championships Quarterfinalist.

Legends FC Academy 1 (CA-S) | Dec. 04, 7:30 am

Solar will wrap up its opening National League weekend by competing against a team from the same state association as its first match in Legends FC 02. Legends reached the finals of the 2015 Region IV Championships and reached the semifinals of the 2016 Cal South National Cup. Legends will enter the opening weekend in first place of the FWRL California Regional League Cal South Division after placing fourth last year.
