This past weekend,
Indiana Futsal was honored to host for the 1st time, the US Futsal Midwest Regional Championship. The event brought over 1,000 people together at Jonathan Byrd’s Fieldhouse in Westfield, IN to play and enjoy futsal.
A total of 57 teams participated in boys U10, U12, U14, U16, U19 and Open Men, and girls U11, U14, U16 and Open Women divisions. The champion of each division qualifies to move on to the US Futsal Federation National Championships in San Jose, California scheduled on July 14-17, 2016.
“Indiana Soccer and Indiana Futsal were excited to host the 1st US Midwest Futsal regional event in Indiana and to provide over 500 players an opportunity to participate in this exciting and fast-paced form of the soccer,” Indiana Soccer’s Executive Director Dave Guthrie, stated. “We are looking forward to bringing and creating more futsal events for current soccer players and for those not currently playing soccer who want to play this fast, exciting and fantastic 5 v 5 game”. Guthrie, continued… “Indiana Soccer is committed to inclusion, and through the newly formed Indiana Futsal Association, players who do not have access to the “game on grass” will have a different access to the world’s game. The passion, and intensity for Futsal observed this past weekend, confirmed that there is pent-up demand for this game. Futsal provides an environment conducive for a player’s technical development and, more importantly, it provides for the cognitive development of the player.  The player is required to expand his or her spatial awareness from 180 degree to 360 degrees, and is encouraged to make many decisions at breakneck speed. It is no wonder that some of the greatest soccer players on earth contribute there soccer prowess to their Futsal experience,” Guthrie concluded.
The players brought high competition and a lot of passion. Spectators enjoyed high intensity, fast-paced games everywhere they turned. A total of 60 games were played Saturday, followed by 45 more games on Sunday which included the semi-final and final matches.
