Five North Texas Alums receive NCAA Conference Player of the Week awards

FRISCO, Texas (Oct. 4, 2017) – North Texas Soccer alums Haley Berg (Texas), Ryliegh Bohnenstiehl (Oral Roberts), M.J. Eckart (Lamar), Cyera Hintzen (Texas) and Tori Phillips (North Texas) were honored as NCAA Division I Conference Players of the Week. Berg, Bohnenstiehl and Hintzen are receiving consecutive weekly awards.

Berg earned her first Big 12 Freshman of the Week selection last week, and the freshman from Celina, Texas continued her momentum into a second consecutive selection playing for No. 7 Texas. The Under 18 and Under-19 U.S. Soccer Youth National Team pool player scored the first Longhorn goal in a 3-2 overtime win against Texas Tech in addition to playing 92 of 110 minutes in a 0-0 overtime draw against Oklahoma. The freshman has experience playing with Dallas Texans and Solar Soccer Club and competed in the North Texas Soccer Olympic Development Program (ODP) from 2009-12, in addition to multiple US Youth Soccer Region III ODP Camps.

Bohnenstiehl earned her second consecutive Summit League Defensive Player of the Week award and third  in her career after recording four saves and shutting out Western Illinois for 90 minutes. Bohnenstiehl ranks fifth in the conference with a .771 save percentage and fourth with 1.53 goals against per game. The junior keeper was named to the 2015 Summit League All-Freshman Team and has led Oral Roberts in starts in each of the last three seasons. The Corinth, Texas native played her club soccer for ASG Gold.

Eckart recorded a goal and assist in a 3-1 Lamar win over Sam Houston State before netting a brace against Stephen F. Austin in a 3-2 win en route to receiving the Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week award. Eckart’s second goal against SFA was a penalty-kick game-winner with four minutes left that ultimately gave Lamar its first-ever win over SFA. Eckart currently is tied for second in the league play with three goals in five games. The senior from Flower Mound, Texas played her club soccer for Dallas Texans and Liverpool FC.

Hintzen has now taken home the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week award for three straight weeks. The sophomore forward netted two goals from over 20 yards out in a 3-2 overtime Texas win against Texas Tech. Hintzen landed four out of five shots on frame against Oklahoma, but no player would find the back of the net in the scoreless draw.  The 2016 Big 12 Freshman of the Year leads Texas in both goals and assists with seven and four respectively. The Garland, Texas native played North Texas ODP from 09-13 and represented North Texas at the 2013 US Youth Soccer ODP Championships. Hintzen played club soccer for Sting and FC Dallas and won the 2010 North Texas Soccer State Cup with the latter.

Phillips earned the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week accolade after anchoring a North Texas back line that recorded two shutouts and only allowed four shots on target over the week. The senior defender has appeared in all 11 games for North Texas after playing in 20 and starting 14 last season. The Forney, Texas native played her club soccer with FC Dallas Youth and Mustangs FC and competed in the 2013 North Texas State Cup.
