First Day of Finals at Spring State Cup

Sandy, UT (5/25/2017)

What a day! Eight teams were declared champions yesterday in what was one of the most intense days of the tournament both on and off the pitch. There were insanely tight scorelines in most matches with a couple needing extra time or even a shootout to decide the winner. After a beautiful couple of days the weather turned bad quickly yesterday as it went from perfect to nasty to perfect again in a few short hours. There was even a lightning delay, but the amazing players, coaches, and fans braved it all and continued play like nothing even happened. All in all it was a day full of excitement befitting the first day of finals.

Finals

Girls 17U

00 Celtic FC Premier beat La Roca TC 1-0 in one of the most dramatic games of the night by far. Celtic was up 1-0 when La Roca was awarded a penalty. Just at that moment, the lightning struck and a delay was issued. Over an hour later La Roca stepped up to take the kick and it was saved by the Celtic keeper! That wasn't her only big save as literally on the last kick of the game she deflected a shot up off the crossbar before gathering the rebound to secure victory.

Girls 14U

Avalanche 03 ECNL I beat La Roca RH 1-0. In another tight match, and another tough loss for La Roca, Avalanche prevailed when in the second half, all of their sustained pressure finally broke the La Roca defense and they scored. That one goal was enough and they held on to become champions.

Girls 13U

As sweet as the 1-0 vicotry for the 14U Avalanche team was, the 7-6 penalty shootout loss by the 13U team was bitter. In a back and forth match where neither team could get a hold on the game nor score a goal. It was penalties that decided it. A crucial save by the 04 Celtic FC Premier Green keeper helped lead them to victory and to the championship.

Girls 12U

In the first of three finals for La Roca head coach Pancho Ovalle, his team came out on top. Led by a brace from Brooklyn Robinson, La Roca PO was victorious 3-0 over Forza FC East 05 AM.

Girls 11U

In a historic win not only for the club but for the state of Utah as a whole, Infinity SC 06 DC beat Avalanche 06 Black TP 1-0 to become the first ever Cache Valley team to win a State Cup. Congrats to all of them for playing their hardest and making history.

Boys 15U

In the biggest scoreline of the day, La Roca TJ rolled over AFC Apex 02 College Prep 8-0. It was a culmination of an outstanding season for La Roca TJ and its players as they cruised through the regular season and fought off all challengers at State Cup to lift the trophy and become champions.

Boys 12U

In what was a close game, needing extra time even, USA Premier 05B SA scored 3 goals in the extra period to win 7-4 over La Roca DC. This was the second time that USA had gone into extra time and scored multiple goals to win comfortable.

Boys 11U

USA had a good day in the younger age groups as in addition to the 12U title they will be taking home the 11U title as well. USA Premier 06B SM beat Forza FC 06 DN 4-3 in a fantastic game that looked to be up for grabs.

Congratulations to all of our champions and to all of our finalists for a wonderful State Cup and we hope to see you all next year.
