Club Spotlight: Basalt Soccer Club

Best known for its Gold Medal fly fishing waters, the town of Basalt is also becoming known for the growth of soccer in the Roaring Fork Valley.  The Basalt Soccer Club, was founded in 1997, is one of the founding clubs in the former Western Slope Soccer League (WSSL), and although still considered a small mountain club, BSC broke the 300 player barrier for the first time this Spring, with the majority of its players in the U10-U18 age brackets.

“Our improved programming is something that we are extremely proud to offer the players and families in our club,” said Rod Woelfle, president of Basalt Soccer Club. “One of the many highlights are the All Valley Select Teams. These teams are made up of players from several valley clubs – Aspen, Basalt, Carbondale, Glenwood Springs – although the program lives under the BSC umbrella, it is truly a cross club effort that has proved to be very successful. Each of the clubs works very well together, and the best thing about the program, is the way parents and players from these different clubs are able to meet, form new friendships, travel together, and play together as one team. That to me is what soccer is all about.”

The club also offers year-round soccer with futsal during the winter months, a developmental summer session, and its first-ever tournament this October, Socktoberfest. The club hopes to make it an annual tradition for clubs from around the state to play a little soccer, and spend some time in the Roaring Fork Valley this fall.
